Smooth landings, more rebound: the ASICS GEL™ technology

With every step you run, up to three times your body weight impacts your feet, knees, and back. Smart cushioning disperses these microshocks, reduces the risk of injury, and keeps your legs fresh longer. That means more joy and consistency in your training.

The evolution from αGEL (1986) to PureGEL™ (2025)

  • 1986: ASICS introduces αGEL, the first silicone-filled cushioning element – a milestone in running shoe tech.
  • From 2023: PureGEL™ emerges: approx. 65% softer and 4% more responsive than traditional GEL™.
  • 2025: PureGEL™ is built into all top models, often encapsulated to reduce weight and enhance performance.

How ASICS GEL works in your running shoes

GEL™ is a viscoelastic silicone compound. It deforms on impact (viscous), absorbs energy, and rebounds instantly (elastic). It redirects shock horizontally rather than driving it vertically into your joints – like airbags for your feet.

Rearfoot GEL: focus on heel cushioning

With PureGEL™, ASICS has shifted cushioning more toward the heel. This enhances shock absorption, reduces weight, and stabilizes your landing. FF BLAST™ foams energize the forefoot for a more responsive ride.

Examples of current Rearfoot GEL models:

  • ASICS Gel-Nimbus 27: PureGEL™ in the heel + FF BLAST™ in the forefoot = maximum comfort with minimal weight.
  • ASICS Gel-Kayano 32: Rearfoot GEL + 3D Guidance System™ for stability and support.
  • ASICS Gel-Cumulus 27: Heel-only GEL cushioning – ideal for neutral runners who want a soft touchdown.

Older models with Rear + Forefoot GEL:

  • ASICS Gel-Kayano 31: Full-length GEL for a soft and balanced transition.
  • ASICS Gel-Nimbus 26: GEL cushioning in both heel and forefoot for ultra-soft landings on long runs.

Innovation without compromise

FF BLAST™ and FF BLAST+ ECO have replaced forefoot GEL in many models. They’re lighter, more responsive, and enhance performance without sacrificing comfort. The result? Maximum shock absorption and energy return – with less weight.

Hybrid midsoles: PureGEL™ meets FF BLAST PLUS

In high-stack shoes like the Nimbus 27, PureGEL™ sits under the heel, topped with FF BLAST PLUS foam. This combo delivers soft landings and energetic rebound – without adding weight.

Care tips for longer-lasting GEL comfort

  • Rinse gently after rain, stuff with newspaper – never place on a heater.
  • Wipe midsoles with water only – harsh cleaners can dry out silicone and foam.
  • If you run daily, alternate pairs. Like muscles, GEL and foam need recovery too.
  • After ~600–800 km, most shoes lose their cushioning – time for a new pair.
